In short naaaaa.
Firstly a lot of what labour is doing is the correct medicine for reviving the UK, not in strong enough doses nor fast enough, and not without some complete errors like going on yet another anti disability rampage, or being weirdly authoritarian but none the less a lot of what it is doing is correct.
People are simply pissy because the economy is shit, Britain is an aggressively anti-revolutionary country, its people casually bare what on the continent would cause out right riots and take pride in suffering it, that means as bad tempered British politics is at present, there is time to right the course.
It is right that the UK is far to militarily intertwined with the US, the French were right to keep some distance and now facing the job of untangling is a very difficult prospect.
But to be frank its painful, but not catastrophic if the US exited NATO stage left its possible NATO could suffer a strategic defeat in Ukraine as Putin plays the nuclear card, but it would survive and the UK is especially well placed out of all of Europe to weather such a unfortunate episode.
Secondly of the fundamental points a lot of writers seem to take for granted is that, a Trumpist America will simultaneously be a authoritarian, illiberal menace, and also all powerful and successful.
That is extremely unlikely to be true, the only real authoritarian success story is China, and the China project is radically different from the Trump project.
There is a reason that in the last century that liberal democracy defeated all the other-isms, authoritarianism is simply bad for business, and this will be undoubtly shown in the next few years.
Despite the endless smug economist articles Trumps America is heading for a blatant fall.
It has a wildly overinflated stock market were valuations simply don’t reflect reality, and ever increasing political dysfunction, and corruption, that expresses itself in wild threats of tariffs and even outright violence agaisnt trade partners. It has increasingly little room to manoeuvre regarding its growing debt burden, and it wants to address this with more aggressive tax cuts while burning its future prospects by destroying its science base to fund this.
This is a powder keg waiting to go off.
It has to be stated this is the honeymoon period, as mad and as bad as it is been so far, this is as smooth as it will ever go, the Democrats will come up with some sort of platform for resistance, the everyday wear and tear of goverment will decay Trumps popularity, the collected freakshow he has running things will inevitably fall out.
I am bullish on the prospects of liberalism worldwide, especially if this sickly demented orange old man is supposed to be the competition, even if it means the US has to eat a lost decade or two.
