Another gentle reminder to Americans—even if you are liberal—that:
– Canadians do not want to join the United States. Period. No ifs and or buts, the vast majority of Canadians don’t want to join the United States. Stop with the bullshit daydreaming about being okay with it if we join voluntarily.
– We are not here to save you from yourselves. Stop dreaming about how a Canadian state and Canadians will somehow further your progressive policy goals. It doesn’t signal anything more than you want to use us.
– You may not be individually responsible for Donald Trump’s actions, but you’re still under the aegis of the world’s largest military and economy, and form part of the body politic that is the United States of America. A third of your country voted for this. Another third couldn’t be bothered to show up to stop him. This is the choice of the American people whether by act or omission.
– Stop whining to us about how sorry you are and fight for your country, while you still have a chance.

I don’t think many Americans fully appreciate how big of story this has become in Canada. Like I think there’s a tendency to brush off his comments as just “Trump being Trump, he doesn’t actually mean it,” but in Canada, it isn’t just a passing news story or some funny joke.
Even amongst the very apolitical people I know I have been surprised with the amount of outrage. So many people are boycotting American products, cancelling trips, etc. Don’t know if I’ve ever seen Canadians this angry, even when Trudeau was at his most unpopular.

He literally just says outrageous things to keep headlines off the more negative, unpopular things he’s doing.
The rhetoric is still harmful and is fuel for his base, but the media is just playing straight into his hands by reporting on every statement he makes.
