I feel like they were planning on playing good-cop-bad-cop with Hegseth, before settling on a deal that sells out Ukraine, but Hegseth was too stupid to not give away the game so quickly.

Obviously trump wants a peace deal asap so he can claim he solved the war. The path to an actual peace plan is very narrow, and trump will punish whoever is responsible for not signing. If he thinks Zelenskyy foiled the peace, he will withhold aid. If he thinks putin foiled the peace, he will increase it.

The problem with this is that it’s going to be basically impossible for Ukraine to accept whatever humiliating deal Trump cuts behind their backs, so they’re almost guaranteed to be blamed as the obstacles to peace for rejecting it, and not Russia. In other words, this is tough language from people who feel safe there is almost zero percent chance they’ll ever have to back it up—by design.
