Southwest Airlines is cutting approximately 15% of its corporate jobs, affecting about 1,750 employees, to save $210 million in 2025 and $300 million in 2026. CEO Bob Jordan called the decision “unprecedented” in the company’s 53-year history, as Southwest aims to become more efficient. This move follows a settlement with activist investor Elliott Investment Management and includes other cost-cutting measures like a hiring freeze and route reductions. The layoffs will be completed by the end of the second quarter, with affected employees receiving salary, benefits, and bonuses until late April.

  2. I have coworkers that worked at SWA, 1750 employees is like one layer of the managerial onion that traps the organization in malaise. Who knows if they’ll actually give employees more initiative though because the whole CA industry might as well be the CYA industry.

  3. The job figures for February are going to be abyssmal. Every month under Joe Biden, the jobs reports were very good.

January was lackluster but not horrible. February is going to be a gulch. Big corporations are cutting staff and Trump and Musk are firing thousands of federal workers for not being maga enough.

For what it’s worth, Southwest has been in a bit of a rough patch with an activist investor (Elliott Management) getting a big stake and basically calling the shots. I think this was bound to happen regardless of macro factors, the company just hasn’t been in a good place lately.
