    Article Translated from Dutch:

Ukrainian President Zelensky must ensure that the relationship with the US president is quickly restored. This is what NATO boss Rutte says after the harsh clash yesterday between Zelensky and Trump in the White House.

Rutte calls the harsh confrontation in the Oval Office “unfortunate”, but refused to go deeper into the dispute. “What I told Zelensky is that we must respect what Trump has done so far.” According to Rutte, Zelensky must now “find a way to restore the relationship with Trump”.

Rutte says he is convinced that Trump would also like a “lasting peace” in Ukraine. “What is needed for this is that we all work together: Europe, Ukraine and the United States.”

  2. Massive Rutte L.

Trump doesn’t want a relationship with Zelenskyy. He wants a relationship with Putin. Yesterday was a humiliation ritual, nothing more, nothing less.

  3. So here’s thing, and I know there’s going to be a knee jerk reaction to this:

If you watched the full meeting, Trump was on board until Vance stepped in, and then Trump pivoted hard against Zelenskyy. It’s entirely possible that Trump will ultimately side against Zelenskyy and nothing can be done to change that, but it’s also entirely possible that it isn’t/wasn’t inevitable.

But at the end of the day, Ukraine needs the US way more than the US needs Ukraine. There’s a very real possibility that Ukraine falls without US support because Europe [is not prepared to shoulder the cost alone.](https://www.bruegel.org/analysis/defending-europe-without-us-first-estimates-what-needed)

Zelenskyy is going to have to choose between his pride and his country. And yes, there’s a world in which he throws away his pride to grovel to Trump and that still isn’t enough to save him because Trump has a grudge from 2019. But that’s the reality of the situation.

Can these people just treat Trump as the fascist he is and not a victim?

So basically Europeans are siding with Trump. Zelenskyy is so done for. I feel sorry the man. The only hope he has is begging Macron to help him. Only France have the weapon and nuclear deterrence to help him

This is the worst outcome man

  6. does this man honestly believe that there was ever a deal on the table where european troops backed by american support would be allowed in ukraine? is he clinically insane? like for real, you have to consume literally all of the funniest of mushrooms in order to believe that’s a thing that could even conceivably happen

Come on Europe, grow a spine.

But at the same time we can’t shun Rutte for saying this. Trump is an unstable manbaby who might even green light a Russian invasion of Europe just to “own the libs” or “eradicate wokeism in Europe”, so they have to tread very carefully.

  8. So… erm… It is actually hard to say what to do now. I suppose it’s reasonable for the head of NATO to favor a course that is good for NATO.

In terms of Ukrainian interest, it probably *is* wise for Ukraine to try and stabilize this relationship. Options are pretty limited. Ultimately, Europe sends “thoughts and prayers” not an alternative to US sponsorship.

Otherwise… NATO is a different kind of thing than it was last week regardless of where the Trump-Zelensky story goes. That doesn’t mean it will disappear. Alliance with very little trust often do hold together. They just tend to fall apart when war comes. NATO was a pretty special case. Now it’s a standard case.

  9. I’m sure it hurt Rutte to say this just as it hurt us to hear it. But he became the head of NATO at probably the most trying time for the alliance in its history. He’s trying to navigate an incredibly difficult situation as strategically as he can.

  10. Rutte destroyed the Netherlands in the past 13 years and now he will do the same on European level. You are completely wrong and need to support Zelensky instead of a dictator in the US.
