This is obviously an attempt by Moscow to flatter and ingratiate itself with Trump by painting democratic Europe as the enemy. They know that Trump sympathizes far more with Russian-style governance than democracy, and they’re hedging their bets that Trump will outright declare in favour of Russia.
Both the U.S. and Russia share similarities: large, expansive continental powers, federalist states, etc. The alignment de Tocqueville presaged is finally coming to fruition.
