  1. I read this story yesterday, and it’s very gripping. There’s a scary, unsolved mystery that (it seems) local government authorities are working very hard to keep unsolved.

    The author completely flubs the definition of “null hypothesis” in a way that suggests neither he nor his editors would find it easy to pass a high school Intro to Statistical Concepts course. I think it’s reasonable to expect the NYT to know what the most basic concept of standard statistical practice means and define it with at least a wikipedia level of accuracy.
