I came to the US with a much more libertarian, small-government mentality and gradually moved to a more center-left, safety-net good while here.
Basically, the issues between countries are completely different, and you can effectively be moderate and hold both these positions.
My conclusion after years of reflection is that the intra-country left-right divides are, for the most part, untransferable and it drives me completely nuts when people align with their theoretical ideological counterparts out of pure partisanship.
