What’s the endgame here? Is Trump actually just gonna order the Marines to seize Greenland when he realizes he’s not able to make Denmark sell it?

  2. I’m sure the population of an island who wants to be left alone will be very kind and not at all hostile to a foreign leader of a country currently threatening to annex them.

  3. The article is missing that this is currently a major diplomatic crisis in Denmark. The American delegation is not welcome. This is the official position of both Denmark and Greenland. It is practically unheard of that the US VP would go on such a visit uninvited even if it is “just” to visit their military base.

So far the Danish government has asked allies to stay out of the dispute, because the thinking was that we could handle it ourselves quietly and without having it jeopardize other Danish interests (such as US support for Ukraine). Now, it seems that is not the case. Over the last two days we have seen a change in rhetoric from Denmark about the US’s escalations. It has moved from quiet dissatisfaction and reassurances about partnering on security to outright condemnation. It seems clear to me that the next step will be to ask allies to resolutely condemn the American visit and their interference in Greenlandic politics.
