I think the problem is that Democrats just don’t talk about immigration and when they do it’s just endorsing Republican ideas. If you don’t talk about it, people get the wrong idea and assume you have a hidden agenda. If you just use Republican talking points, they’re just going to vote Republican because they can see right through you. I think Walz is right. We should promote immigration and talk about its benefits more. Present a real alternative.

The Republicans are more trusted for the following reasons:
* Controlling immigration is viewed as “security”
* Security is male-coded
* The Republican Party is male-coded
That’s it – it’s the same reason why the Republicans are more trusted with the (male-coded) economy despite the last two Republican presidents having driven the economy into the ground. Until those factors change, the Democrats can chase the Republicans rightwards all they want, and the only things that they’ll succeed in doing is a) cede control of the messaging to the Republicans and b) hemorrhage left-leaning voters who will simply stop going to the polls.

I’m clinging to my belief that you can fix the majority of anti-immigration attitudes, and thus leave it as a marginal voter priority for committed xenophobes essentially, by cracking down on visible crime and anti-social behavior. Not even language or other culture stuff.
