Almost 170 Palestinian journalists were killed in the Gaza Strip after Israel launched a war of retaliation for the Hamas terrorist attacks on October 7, 2023.

In June 2024, then in March 2025, Forbidden Stories coordinated the Gaza Project, gathering more than 50 journalists from 18 media outlets. They investigated the targeting of several Gazan reporters and media buildings by the Israeli army.

They also took forward the unfinished reporting of Palestinian journalists who were killed or injured. They also revealed the Israeli government’s strategies to exonerate itself of any responsibility in the deaths of these journalists.

Thank you for posting this. I work in journalism, albeit not on this conflict, and the deaths of people in my own profession in Gaza have weighed on me very heavily.

Unfortunately, the IDF has a long history of targeting and killing journalists, and subsequently lying about the circumstances of their deaths. The most famous case is Shireen Abu Akleh, an American who was killed in 2022, though there have been quite a few others. The response to her killing are pretty similar to that of the 15 paramedics recently executed and dumped into graves. The IDF initially lied about the circumstances of her death, and then when visual evidence came to light exposing their lies, conducted a perfunctory investigation and declared her death a “mistake.” Israeli soldiers and police also invaded her funeral and beat her pall-bearers as they were carrying her coffin, if the humiliation wasn’t already enough.

The Biden government refused to open its own investigation, lest it displease its ally and its ally’s domestic supporters. I don’t believe that her death was an accident, or that the deaths of many of these journalists were either.
