Because ideology matters (or can matter) in markets, they don’t have to be all about efficiency and cold, hard utility calculus (in before nerds argue about ideological satisfaction being utility).
Sure, eventually the inefficiencies will pile up and threaten to derail the ideological circlejerk economy, but it can be resilient for some time and, if it manages to capture the state apparatus, basically grant itself economic victory by fiat. There needn’t even be direct orders, if you fill up positions with the sort of people who prefer Gun Moron brand coffee over all others for purely ideological reasons and make sure the office is always stocked with Gun Moron brand coffee instead of something else, then Gun Moron coffee comes out on top vs the competition, and all on the government dime.

The few comments here apparently didn’t read the article. “The MAGA economy” here is not referring to the economy overall under Trump. It is referring to the kind of alternative economy in the US where MAGAts consume only products that are expressively MAGA.

Honestly if I was in charge of the DNC, the first thing I would do is start a shell company to promote MAGA themed grifts. Just suck all the money from these fools and pump it into down ballot Dem campaigns.
