In 1997, the GDP of India was lower than Japan, UK, France, Italy, Canada, Brazil, S.Korea, Russia, Spain, Australia, Mexico and Netherlands and Sub-Saharan Africa.
A lot of people talking about how India is still very poor. Guess what it used to be even poorer.
In 1997, India had a larger population than Sub-Saharan Africa while being poorer, a larger population than all those other countries combined while having a lower GDP than each one of them.
Comments about India not being rich miss the point. India is not rich but its certainly not as poor as it used to be.
And we used to be very, very, very poor. We have not grown as fast as we would have liked but we have grown much faster than other countries while facing challenges that have torn apart many other countries while also keeping our democracy alive.
Its like asking a 150kg person who used to be 200kg about why they cant touch their toes yet.
