What are we failing to do now that we were doing perfectly 20-25 years ago?

In 2008, voting against Obama was considered insane by under-30 year olds. People like Sarah Palin were a funny joke rather than the face of the Republican Party. LGBT activism and supporting gay marriage was super cool and everyone wanted to be more like Europe. What happened?

    >As she grew older, her fascination with the country’s history took a more sinister turn. In particular, it was shaped by men she encountered — first of all, her mother’s partner, Dax Mallaburn, a US felon who had been a member of a white supremacist prison gang while serving a sentence for firearms offences in South Carolina.

    >Emily had met Mallaburn via a pen pal scheme for prisoners, and he lived with the family after his release. Much later, Rhianan told her deradicalisation mentor that Mallaburn had educated her with an alternative history of the second world war, calling him a “literal Nazi”. At the time Mallaburn was still living with them, Rhianan also accused him of having touched her inappropriately, although after this had been reported to police, she denied it. Mallaburn, who returned to the US after the relationship ended, told the FT that he “categorically denies” any inappropriate conduct toward Rhianan. He also said that Rhianan’s “engagement with racist ideologies” predated his contact with her family.

Look I get the state wants to require everyone to get an Poasting Licence to make it easier to arrest people for takes it doesn’t like, but this girl was living with a Literal Nazi lmao
