I don’t get his appeal. I can understand why people hovered around authoritarians like Stalin because they came from nothing so people found them relatable. But Trump has been handed blank checks all his life, he has nothing in common with the average working class man.

If Brooks is going to posit that Enlightenment individualism and moral relativism are responsible for something like the rise of Trump then he needs to reckon with the fact that Trump’s base is simultaneously more outwardly religious than the rest of society (even to the point of wanting to force a religious conception of the good life) and also the home to the most malignant and pervasive moral degeneracy in our society (especially among those who want to force their views on everyone). He does not do this and so his article falls flat on its face.

David Brooks leans on philosopher Alasdair MacIntyre to argue that Trump succeeds because our society lacks a shared moral framework or definition of common good. I don’t buy it completely because I don’t think that, for example, it explains the evangelical right’s obsession with Trump, who shares very few morals with (evangelical) Christianity.
I still find it an interesting perspective to consider, particularly since there are many divisive issues among moderate and left-leaning groups that that you could argue are the result of different moral standards, and there can be no real common ground if the morality between perspectives is incompatible.

Ppl channel their resentment and personal dissatisfaction with life through Trump. Trump is the grievance candidate. To be fair, and I know this sub isn’t going to like it, but Trump is also the f-you vote to the cringe social/cultural policies of the Obama-Biden era. The me too movement, “believe women,” social policing of speech, political correctness, gender politics, etc. is unraveling. Like it out not, Trump is emblematic of the wide scale rejection of much the cultural movement since the early 2000s.

Echo chambers. Religious people live in a completely separate media environment from the rest of us. They parrot his talking points and hide his deep corruption.
There are online echo chambers to that help but the GOP electorate base is made up mainly by evangelicals who love in a different world.
It’s been 10 years and we’re still twisting ourselves in knots to pretend that it isn’t racism/misogyny/homophobia/transphobia/islamophobia/general bigotry.
