The protests are against government corruption and police brutality, starting when this teacher was killed in custody after being arrested for defaming a high ranking police official. The protests turned violent recently, one tire salesman saying that he thinks the government planted violent protesters as a way of justifying the police shooting them (which I think happens in the US, too).
