Newsweek — Republican lawmakers have blocked a move that could have forced President Donald Trump's administration to release the files on the sex offender Jeffrey Epstein's death and investigation.

All but one of the GOP members of the House Rules Committee voted against a Democrat amendment that would have allowed Congress to vote on whether the files should be made public or not.

The amendment, introduced by Californian Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna, was voted down 5 to 7 on Monday evening.

On July 14, 2025, House Republicans on the House Rules Committee voted 5-7 to block a Democratic amendment proposed by Rep. Ro Khanna, which would have required the Justice Department to release Jeffrey Epstein’s files publicly within 30 days. Despite one Republican supporting the measure, the amendment failed, prompting Democrats to accuse Republicans of obstructing transparency, while some Republicans argued it was unrelated to the cryptocurrency legislation it was attached to.
