Harrowing story about a 35 yo Irish national who was imprisoned by ICE for nearly 100 days after he overstayed his visa by three days, following medical advice to avoid air travel after tearing his calf while in the US.
Thomas was arrested in December, after suffering a mental health episode, and signed papers on December 17, 2024, admitting he had overstayed his US visa by three days and agreeing to be deported. Nonetheless, he remained imprisoned in ICE facilities for nearly three months in administrative limbo, unable to get information on how and when he would be deported to Ireland, which he had already agreed to.
According to his attorney, ICE refused to deport him and transferred him to a facility managed by the US Bureau of Prisons, where Thomas alleges he was subjected to inhuman conditions: he was given dirty, damaged, unwashed clothing, saw guards throw his psychiatric meds on the floor of his cell, faced hunger, cold, roach infestations, and experienced “unbearable” nerve pain from the lack of movement.
Thomas was finally extracted from his cell by ICE and deported to Ireland in mid-March, three months after he agreed to be deported from the US.
