I’m not anti Mamdani, but he’s literally running against Andrew Cuomo and Eric Adams. Two of the most disliked Democrats I could’ve thought of prior to the election

The problem is we can’t just win an election, we need to be able to win reelction. Both Trump and Biden style populism won their respective elections, but failed on reelection, largely because their governing was unpopular with large swathes of the populace. Before we decline Zohran the savior of the party, lets wait and see whether or not he’s despised in a year. I’m somewhat hopeful that the political dynamics in NYC will mean he’ll be constrained to doing good things (YIMBY shit) and most of the many, many, many bad things he wants to do won’t come to fruition; in which case, he should end up fairly popular.
Like we shouldn’t just be talking about what messaging or whatever we need to win in 2028, because it won’t mean much unless we get an admin that actually does a good job of governance and can also win in 2032. We shouldn’t just change our messaging but then go back to Warren/Biden style policies, or even worse, DSA/Bernie style policies. We need to also be able to govern well.

Like its the most blue city you could get, I say this cause in Brazil a politician named haddad won the mayorship of são paulo Brazil biggest city, but he ran for governor and president it wasn’t even close he lost badly
in the US we have Brandon Johnson that was also very left wing and has the same policies as mamdani, he is currently very unpopular 14% approval with a net favorability rating of –56, so lets see if he mamdani can first be a successful mayor

Go ahead and go to the left then. Someone like Mamdani can win in a deep blue city but will be toxic for the rest of the party via association, and if Dems run radical nonsense like Mamdani in the swing states and districts that matter, my god they are going to lose and lose big. And then they will eventually be so traumatized by right wing mis-rule that they come back to the sane bipartisan moderate center. It’s not a matter of if but when. We are not going to elect progressives. It just won’t happen.
