Maybe we could put these streetcars on wheels so they can get around traffic on all these streets that are too narrow for a dedicated right-of-way.
When I lived in Toronto over a decade ago it wasn’t uncommon to wait like 20 minutes for a streetcar that should’ve taken five. Then one full one would arrive, followed immediately afterwards by two empty ones. Uh oh, a streetcar got cut off by a taxi and rear-ended it. The entire intersection is now closed and shuttle buses are running.
Meanwhile in Vancouver, the trolleybuses mostly avoid this issue unless it’s snowing or something. The ride isn’t even that much worse than a streetcar – you’d be surprised how much smoother an electric bus rides. Yeah it’s not as romantic and it doesn’t have the same prestige but the flexibility is pretty helpful

Ha, a running club in DC does a similar event every year. For all the shit that streetcar gets, you have to run about a 7:30 mile for 2 miles to beat it.
… or a car can be slightly ajar in the parking lane so it can’t get past it.

The last time I took a street car in Toronto, a girl got on with white foam coming out of her nose. The driver came on over the PA and said, “Don’t give her any money, she will just spend it on crack.”
