Whataboutism is one of those nonsense terms that is entirely a matter of perspective. “People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones” is a common rebuttal after all, I bet many of the people here might have said something similar to it before and yet is that not just whataboutism? Is “the pot calling the kettle black” not just whataboutism?
And when you are accused of wrongdoing is it not relevant to point out that your accusers are acting in bad faith? If they do such a thing as well, then certainly *they either don’t believe it’s wrong* and are just pretending to believe it so they can criticize you, *they think they are an exception*, like an anti abortion protestor who secretly gets one, or they believe *the benefits of that behavior outweigh the negatives* but then refuse to acknowledge that could be the same for you or finally, *they understand that fixing it is difficult* but only acknowledge that nuance for themselves.
It’s classic cognitive bias, where our actions are intensely nuanced but the actions of others reflect their true selves. The accuser gets the nuanced reality where they’re “an exception” and need that abortion/can speed/whatever, and they’re just making hard decisions with difficult tradeoffs, while everyone else is bad for getting an abortion/speeding/whatever.
The only instances where that’s not the case are things like addictions, but it’s hard to find a smoker who doesn’t actually know smoking is bad, their denialism of that is an ego defense cause they can’t admit failures than anything else.
The only other explanation is that the accusing party is doing wrong, knows they are doing wrong and makes an active choice to do wrong, and has no desire to fix that they are doing wrong.
Which is for almost everything ever, nonsense. People don’t think of themselves as evil.

Because “whataboutism” is a bullshit term. Hypocrisy absolutely should and has to be called out. Unless you wish to turn into the US foreign policy, which is pretending all your enemies are unforgivable monsters and glazing your allies, even if they do heinous shit.
