Things I’ve had employees tell me over the years (mostly single moms)
“If you schedule me over 33 hours it will push me over the income threshold for my assistance plan. They’ll take away my food stamps”
“I can’t accept this raise. Can you roll it back? That extra $30 per paycheck is going to get my $500 in monthly food assistance taken away”
“If you’re going to require me to work more hours I’m going to have to quit. I’d rather be unemployed and keep my housing assistance than risk losing it.”
# WE’RE #1

Edit: and yes I personally have engaged in manipulating people’s numbers or income status to help them keep their assistance. I don’t feel bad about it either. I wouldn’t have to do it if they didn’t trap people in welfare through assistance programs.
