One of the amazing things about American liberals is how they have been forced to accept responsibility not only for the excesses of the 1960s but also for the reaction to it–neoliberalism. That's one of the findings from my new book, Why Everyone Hates White Liberals (Including White Liberals): A History. It's my fourth book, and it's both a criticism of today's liberalism for its shortcomings, but also an effort to understand how so many Americans have come to define the specter that is the "white liberal." A word history, the book spends an entire chapter focused on neoliberalism and its contemporary, neo-liberalism (note the all-important hyphen). I’ll bite – what are the two neoliberalisms in the 1980s?
How do you think about people critiquing “Neoliberalism” when everyone uses a slightly different definition to the point where it feels like a lot of people are talking past each other?
Is it even possible to make liberalism cool – particularly for young men?
