A great idea for California, and really many other school districts in the country, to offer unique benefits like reduced cost housing as an incentive to hire and keep educators.
The usual tired response to these types of endeavors is to call it “company housing” and just cry about paying teachers more, typical “just subsidize demand” stuff.
Paying them more in HCOL areas won’t make housing more affordable, building more housing will.

The headline is very at odds with the actual situation of: Governments in California have consistently made it illegal to build homes affordable to teachers for decades. Some people are considering a convoluted band-aide that might slightly alleviate the problem, but will probably get nowhere.
