As a nation, we’re cooked. Every single cut that is made, as far as I can make out, is done in order to prop up the state pension. Kids going hungry? Hospitals running threadbare? Armed forces unable to properly prepare for the future? All irrelevant. Doris and Geoff need the handout they failed to save for.
When you take a practical view of it all it gets even worse. Adult social care is throttling local government, and the NHS now spends most of its time keeping old people comfortable because they either didn’t save enough for a carer, or their kids can’t look after them.
The IFS released a tool recently to “let you have a go at solving the budget”. Cutting the state pension by £20 a week basically did it. It freed up every other area from cuts. Instead, the current talk is “how can we raise the already very high tax free allowance to let pensioners not have to worry about paying tax on their income”. Utter, utter madness.

im pretty sure at some point it is worth it in the interests of the state to start forcing the youth into voting just to create conditions necessary to weaken the pensioner voting block and allow for the possibility of voting in someone who will cut pensions to save the fiscal mess
