  1. eSwatini is an absolute monarchy – the last in Africa.

It is the country the Kilmar Abrego Garcia is expected to be deported to.

Most of the countries Trump is deporting people to are barely democratic: South Sudan, Rwanda and eSwatini. Ghana is an exception.

But even in a literal absolute monarchy like eSwatini, there are good people with principles who understand the corruption and disrespect for human rights that is going on, and object to it vocally despite being powerless.

Even in countries where liberals and democrats are powerless, we should be aware of their voices and not allow the voices of the autocrats and illiberals and the corrupt to be the default voice of all the people.

These activists remind us that Trump’s deal won’t even result in anything positive for the people of eSwatini. This is the United States getting deeper into bed with corrupt, undemocratic autocrats. Americans are probably more familiar with the Central American ones, so it is important to remind everyone that eSwatini’s government is autocratic.
