The worst thing that could have happened to the United States during the Second Cold War was to have a president who was a complete moron, a complete idiot who, by all rights, should have become a homeless person under the Brookline Bridge, not a billionaire. It would have been like having Robert Taft as president in 1948 instead of Truman. A disaster.
To be fair, no one else is interested in competing with China either, the big difference is that Trump just stopped the pretense.
