Can someone steel-man why Russia is continuing this invasion?
Ukraine discovered sources for extracting gas on the lips of Crimea and the Black Sea. Russia has those regions occupied, if I were to guess Putin was paranoid about Ukraine opening up their markets and soaking itself with EU and NATO integration because then Ukraine would experience a lot economic development and leadership. Russians would start questioning the competency of Putin’s leadership and revolt.
Continuing to invade makes Russia’s borders closer to NATO and it legitimizes NATO more as a instrument to blockade Russian aggression. There is no strategic reason to continue this war at all, Putin just seems totally lusted for power and blood at this point even at the expense of his own people for lines on a Map….
