Why does a company even need to do a song and dance with the federal government to justify raising prices on goods?

When harm to the market without harm to consumers is not a sufficient basis to reject mergers such as that between Kroger and Albertson’s, details like this are relevant information. If the government doesn’t have any business in the prices of goods, that means it has much more business that it otherwise would in keeping markets competitive.

Half of all categories of items increase in price at a rate faster than the median change in CPI.
This is tautologically true and says nothing about price gauging.

FYI – Half of all items have their prices raised above the average inflation. And half have their prices raised below average inflation. It’s an average. That’s how it works.
