He’s right for a definition of neoliberalism that imo should be the main one. People act like the Democratic Party has always been proto-socdem-y, but that really was a post 2008 shift. The Democrats hadn’t been the FDR Party since Walter Mondale got bodied, the fact that the Democrats even are re-associating with him is a major shift away from neoliberalism, neoliberal Democrats explicitly ran against their FDRist image and repainted the working class not as a proletariat in need of leverage over the capitalist class, but as a petite bourgeoisie in need of business freedom.
The caveat of course is that this means Obama was not a neoliberal by that definition. He was hated by those members of the working class who saw themselves as small business owners first and proletarians last (recall Joe the plumber). A caveat I of course do not mind, but the socialist luxury belief treadmill will surely take issue with.
