> We provide the first evidence on transgender earnings in the US using administrative data on over 55,000 individuals who changed their gender marker with the Social Security Administration and had gender-congruent first name changes on tax records. We validate and describe this sample which exhibits positive selection likely associated with the ability to legally affirm gender. To address selection we estimate transgender earnings gaps using timing variation within-person and variation across siblings and coworkers. All three approaches return evidence of robust transgender earnings penalties of 6-13 log points driven by extensive and intensive margin differences.

Job hunting while visibly transgender is flat out awful.
In my own case, pre-transition I was running the privacy team for a mid-sized global tech company, with a team of nine scattered around the world. Post-transition, I was stuck in consulting for a while, billing at a lower hourly rate than I was charging the last time I was billing by the hour more than a decade ago. I eventually found a head of privacy gig again, but it was at a much smaller company, with a modest step down in pay, and a team of 1 that they still haven’t actually put under me as promised.
The questions I got during my various interviews were *wild*, and I honestly likely had legitimate discrimination complaints against several of the companies. At one in particular, a multi-billion dollar global manufacturer, they questioned me in detail about my mental stability during my transition. And of course I didn’t get that job, despite being very uniquely qualified for it.
