Over the past leg of a road run we passively logged 200,000+ wireless signals (Wi-Fi + Bluetooth) across the route….city streets, suburban corridors, marinas, and small towns. No active poking, no packet injection, no deauths…just listening. Then we did a short, focused mission at Harvard (public campus) and compared the campus footprint to the coastal city sweep.

    A few blunt takeaways:

    • Scale: 200k signals across the route. That’s not devices, that’s distinct Wi-Fi/BLE observations, many repeating.

    • Persistence: Certain BSSIDs / BLE beacons show up repeatedly across multiple towns. Not just once but persistent.

    • Smart-city patterns: In waterfront, touristed, and campus areas we saw synchronized beacon cadence and identical vendor OUIs across many fixtures like a grid quietly broadcasting.

    • Vehicular traces: Car hotspot SSIDs and repeating vehicle BLE IDs tracked along commute corridors, not surprising, but useful for O-D mapping.

    • Harvard sweep: Dense mesh of both user devices and what looked like fixed analytic nodes. High beacon density around public access points and central quads. No intrusion, just visibility.

Why this matters (and why I’m posting here): most people think their phones only matter when they connect. In reality, your phone and wearable continually emit ambient signals that are trivially observable and those observations get stitched into movement graphs by whoever’s listening.

We’re not accusing nefarious surveillance. We’re saying: there’s an entire, measurable layer of infrastructure that quietly profiles presence. Commercial analytics, municipal “smart” deployments, advertising platforms and research pilots all contribute. When you combine scale + persistence, it becomes a ledger. Currently these systems exist mostly independent, but when they sync, things get interesting.

    Data highlights:
    • Current trip distance: 1,200 miles
    • Wi-Fi networks logged: 26,000
    • Bluetooth devices logged: 140,000
    • New captures on last leg: 5k Wi-Fi / 57k BLE
    • Tools: passive, no packet injection or connection attempts
