The Italian educator Sofia “Mamma Erasmus” Corradi, who founded the Erasmus students’ exchange program, passed away in Rome this Saturday.
An education researcher, Sofia Corradi dedicated her career to further international mutual recognition of university degrees and student mobility, culminating with the foundation of the Erasmus Programme in 1987.
Since its creation, more than 16 million European students benefitted from the program, strengthening international cooperation, mutual understanding, and professional, academic and personal bonds between Europeans; the European Commission estimated in 2021 than one million babies were born from couples formed by the Erasmus Programme.
