I cant pinpoint when it started, but it feels like we’re being pushed away from owning things altogether.

Everywhere I look, the option to actually buy something and keep it has either been priced out of reach or just quietly removed. Adobe won’t even sell you their software anymore you have to rent it. BMW tried charging people monthly for heated seats. My phone can’t be repaired without begging the manufacturer for permission. Even my “purchased” films and games aren’t really mine they just exist in some cloud until a company decides they don’t.

And now you’ve got firms like BlackRock buying up houses at scale, turning what used to be a basic goal in life owning a home into another endless payment plan. They win both ways either by making house prices higher so we pay more they earn more, or simply by making them more hard to come by meaning we rent form them.

It’s like the whole system’s being redesigned to keep us on permanent subscription mode. No ownership, just access for as long as you can afford it.

Its just one more thing that we no longer possess.

Local Nissan dealership has replaced all the prices in the windows of the used cars with a QR code, it’s all about the monthly payment now!

Microsoft Office, I bought a copy years ago (on a disc) now it’s been replaced with a subscription, a subscription to open your own documents! I have to open my documents on a windows 7 PC that is kept offline!

Apparently AUDI and others now have a subscription that allows the ambient cabin lighting, heated seats and even parts of their headlights to work or not work if you stop paying!
