Maria Lvova-Belova, the Russian Presidential Commissionner to Children’s Rights, recently gave an interview to the show Smotri i Dumai, in which she admits to “adopting” a Ukrainian child abducted from Mariupol and re-educating him to abandon his “Ukrainian sympathies”.
Lvova-Belova was described as a centerpiece in Russia’s vast illegal scheme to abduct Ukrainian children from territories captured in the Russian invasion, separate them from their families, and give them up for adoption in Russian families for “re-education”. Lvova-Belova and Vladimir Putin are both under an arrest warrant by the International Criminal Court for the unlawful deportation of Ukrainian children, an act that could be constituted as an act of genocide under the 1948 Genocide Convention.
Since 2022, at least 20,000 – according to the UN – and up to 700,000 Ukrainian children – according to Russian authorities – have been transferred to Russia in order to destroy their Ukrainian identity; in August 2025, the NGO Save Ukraine revealed the existence of [an online catalogue](https://www.euronews.com/2025/08/08/stolen-children-marketplace-russia-creates-catalogue-of-ukrainian-kids-for-adoption) offering Russian families the option to pick and “adopt” Ukrainian children, who were ordered by physical characteristics and described with adjectives such as “obedient” or “calm”.
