The problem is when actual people start believing it. Online it’s impossible to tell who is actually that clueless and who is just a troll, but I know one person in real life who has dabbled in it. I think his exact quote was “I’ve done my research and I can’t say for sure if the world is round or flat”, which is far enough down the rabbit hole for me to comfortably call him a flat earther.
After having discussions with flat earthers who can’t even explain their own logical theories.. This makes so much sense

I don’t see it as a conspiracy so much as a stupidity test.
In other words, they don’t hire people who believe in Flat Earth as they clearly don’t fit in an intelligence organization.
