It’s been that way for a while. The current Vatican, including Leo, is dominated by Francis appointees, who mostly belong to his reformist wing of the RCC. However, the average “go to Mass every Sunday” Catholic parishioner is arguably as conservative as an American evangelical. Just look at threads in the Catholicism sub discussing things like the Latin Mass or Joseph Strickland – you get the impression that they only care for Vatican authority if it agrees with their reactionary worldview. There’s also the fact that most of the new priests the RCC produces these days would be considered at best ultraconservative by most of the rest of society.
At some point things are going to come to a head – the American branch of the RCC is well known to be way to the right of the rest of the church, and they’re likely to find strong allies in the even more reactionary and fast growing African wing. There’s even schism possibilities, as much as the Vatican will try to keep that from happening.

Dude they gave you the first American pope and you’re still not satisfied?
Latin mass? Do these people even understand what’s being said? You want to sit in a room for 1 hour and not understand a damn thing that’s going on? Is that the relationship these people want with the church?
