It began long before this month.
The conflict is a continuation of the Darfur genocide with the RSF tracing directly from the janjaweed militias that conducted it. Sudan never fully disarmed, with the Darfur region filled with plenty of small rebel factions many of which represent non-Arab ethnic minorities, and the southern SPLM groups mostly forming the government of now independent South Sudan. The former dictator Omar al-Bashir kept the RSF in place to keep a check on these rebel groups, as well as to prevent a coup from the regular army.
This recent round of ethnic cleansing began with a slow simmer as far back as [2022](https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/least-168-killed-western-darfur-violence-aid-group-2022-04-24/), with a small uptick after al-Bashir’s deposition in 2019 and a large one after the RSF broke with the SAF to kick off the current civil war in 2023.
The term „genocide“ has lost all meaning when people and journalists everywhere talk about genocide in Sudan but not a single one finds it necessary to even mention which *people* it is that is supposedly being genocided here. Do we, collectively, give so little shit about Africa that not even our journalists pretend to care which ethnicities are fighting which here and *why*?
Weren’t they doing ethnic cleansing when the civil war began again in Spring 2023?
