  1. Maybe he has a point but his proposal is still a horrible idea. The rent freeze is definitely his worst idea

  2. There’s an interesting note in there about the Berlin experiment – only stock from before 2014 was affected by rent control. Does Zohran want to limit the rent control policy to older housing stock, in a way that still opens up a market for renting out newly built units at market price? Because you’ve got to thread the needle here. The freeze might make building new housing (through what… cutting permitting costs, regulation?) more palatable, but will it really if newer units aren’t rent controlled *and people know it*?

  4. The right approach here is to promise something that is popular and terrible, and then you just don’t do it at all. But is Mamdani going to do it anyway? He might not even know himself

  5. Our hog voters don’t want good economics. They only want sloponomics, the economic-ish policies that will make them feel good for a little bit.
