“Ruling party lawmakers in Honduras installed a temporary congressional body after midnight to assume legislative duties ahead of general elections, provoking cries of an authoritarian takeover by opposition parties, La Prensa newspaper reported.
Leaders of the National and Liberal political parties called the installation of the National Congress Permanent Commission, as the temporary body is known, an illegal maneuver by the ruling Libre party to maintain power, according to La Prensa.
Legislative president Luis Redondo led a group of party lawmakers in setting up the new body, the report said. Redondo called for such a commission earlier this week, while asking for an investigation into alleged electoral fraud.
President Xiomara Castro on Wednesday described what she called a “criminal conspiracy,” instructing the military to investigate any of its members involved. With polls showing Castro’s allies likely to lose in the Nov. 30 vote, the allegations stoked fears of a rough month ahead in a nation that saw a 2009 coup against Castro’s husband, former president Manuel Zelaya, and an election in 2017 widely considered to have been fraudulent.”
