So… as I watch our culture spiral into a dumpster fire of selfishness, delusion, and insanity… it feels like we’re living in a civilization spiritually hijacked by a pantheon of narcissists — except the “gods” aren’t gods at all.
They’re regular people running on ego fumes and ring lights.
Everywhere you look, the same pattern shows up:
- performing instead of living
- extracting instead of relating
- branding instead of knowing
- endless self-mythology without any actual self
It’s like the West accidentally trained an entire population of monkeys to perform for bananas while being told they were gods in a new God-without-God religion.
At this point, I don’t think this is random. Intentional? Well… lets talk about it.
There’s a lineage behind it — a quiet esoteric genealogy running straight from the late 1800s to the screen you’re reading this on.
Theosophy cracked open the astral realms and whispered: “Divinity is real… and you might be the special one.”
Crowley ripped out the last safety rails: “Your will is law — consequences optional.”
The psychedelic revolution woke millions up without teaching them how to stay awake.
Hollywood industrialized the Self.
Silicon Valley weaponized reflection.
And now we’re surrounded by people who think they’re gods but act like addicts.
What we’re left with is a civilization running on a Narcissist OS — a cultural software update that confused personal significance with spiritual truth, and turned every human into an attention-economy survivalist.
I tried to trace the whole arc — how we got here, why it feels hollow, and what happens to a society that replaces the sacred with the selfie and calls it enlightenment.

Nah, you’re absolutely right! Your post was really well written too. Though, due to our current age, any time an em dash, I question whether you had AI help.
Regardless, I think you are spot on.
One one hand this seems like a totally unprecedented times for all the reasons you mentioned (I agree totally with your general assessment), but also there’s “nothing new under the sun” or however it goes. If you have the ears to hear and eyes to see, and are able to digest the gist of spiritual literature (or spiritual example in real people, increasingly rare it seems), then you are extremely lucky. I don’t know what to make of these times but man oh man, there will come a time in the future where people will be simply astounded that we lived this way among people doing what they do. I’ve found the work of Gurdjieff to resonate with what you’re talking about. Also, Christianity (but not modern Christianity).

I love that you are talking about this. I think we are in a pretty interesting era that will pass. Imo the cracks kind of started showing during covid when everyone collectively turned against celebrities singing “Imagine”. Also the Epstein stuff and so many scandals that make the elite just look really disgusting. What used to be accepted without question is now up for debate.
Good idea but focusing on the west doesn’t tell the whole story.
The US has the highest number of influencers but India and Indonesia aren’t far behind. Brazil too which is only partially western. This is without mentioning China and South Korea.
Unfortunately narcissism is a global problem not just confined to the western world.
Yes, replacing theology. Look at the current top two countries in the world, the United States and China. From the very moment they were founded, they were paving the way to replace theology. America tried to replace Europe, China tried to replace the Middle East. I’m a rude person, so I’ll just say it straight: the governments of these two countries are like flies and shit, lucifer and satan, together they disgust the entire world. Hippies, “woke” culture, egalitarianism, Epstein Island, 9/11, inhumane experiments, COVID-19, brainwashing education, feminization of Europe, illegal surrogacy……the list of disgusting things is endless. Yet most people are forced to depend on these government bodies, otherwise they’d be duped like those in Iran and Russia

ok, I cannot go through your (contemporaririly correct!) work because then I would need a week to process and answer but as I mention, from a contemporary point of view I am sure you made good points and the increased craziness the internet has caused over the recent decades is alarming.
but from what I was socialized in (born 1970 in central europe) your timeline makes little sense as it started way earlier. I like to think the big melt or flood 10/12 millenia ago when we started to “industrialize” farming – became farmers digging into mother nature like there is no tomorrow and stopped making gardens (eden?). shift to patriarchy.
now the “new age” movement from the 60/70/80s of last century pinpoints like you calling it the cartesian dogma that has to be overcome…from rene descartes who pictured the human/earthly body like a clockwork, like a machine at the beginning of the (other) new age after “discovery” of the americas, such a modern age again! (sarcasm)
true in all is we forgot how to be real. ken wilber states in the 1970s the process we are in is from becoming oceanic societies where there is little sense of one`s self but it is all collective references to a mature collective with fully developed selves.
now would you think some people/lineages could lose power of it and resist? of, course, rhetoric question. they will. and create lots of chaos to keep their privileges.
so to keep it short and have some more morning coffee…you got the gist. it is just tainted by contemporary and local position you are in. some got preserved in the east but it is not east against west entirely. it has many more layers and we may not make it.
