  1. Some context:

The current ruling coalition is trying to desperately push through last minute changes to the national translator law, making it so that the general director can be replaced with only half of the votes from the managing council (instead of 2/3rds), the vote to do so would be held in secret, and remove the provision making it necessary to prove that the firing is in the public interest.

The opposition is accusing the ruling coalition of trying to Orbanize the national press. In an effort to stop that, they have registered over 100 change proposals, that range from small changes, to requirements that the general director can be fired if they don’t investigate reasons for the delay of GTA 6. This is mostly in an effort to filibuster the rushed proceedings and delay the law until the spring.

During a late night parlament session yesterday, as they were slowly grinding through the procedures for these provisions, one of them was actually approved – the proposal changes the text of the law, stating that the General Director can only be removed if the cat of the MP Agnė Širinskienė expresses disapproval.

The provision obviously won’t make it into the final law, but there will have to be more votes to remove it.

    The cat in question
