Sweden’s political establishment is reopening debate on euro adoption as geopolitical shocks revive fears over currency vulnerability. The krona lost over 20 percent against the euro in the past decade, highlighting risks during crises. Russia’s war and volatile U.S. trade policy have weakened confidence in monetary independence. The government plans an expert panel to assess euro membership after September’s election. Public support remains cautious, but rising insecurity could yet shift Sweden toward the single currency.

Here’s the polling history with regards to switching to the Euro (Ja=Yes, Nej=No)

There was basically consensus to not do it during the Eurozone crisis, but it’s been tightening.

It’s more popular among politicians than among average Swedes. Given that it was rejected in a referendum in 2003, I doubt anything will happen without further polling swings, but if the trend continues it’s possible.

  3. I really don’t know why any country would want to join the Euro unless the have a recent history of currency instability and do not trust their central bank to be responsible in the future. I heavily constrains your response to economic crisises, and without true political union in the EU, have only minor benefits
