Given that Cheng Li-wun is also making diplomatic moves of her own towards other countries, Lai Ching-te is doing the same. While Cheng is focusing on balancing relations, Lai looks to reward countries for recognizing Taiwan as its own country, even if Eswatini is a relatively obscure country when it comes to international relations.

Previously, China had pressured several Afircan countries such as Madagascar from allowing Taiwanese aircraft from flying over their countries. In order to bypass these restrictions, Lai instead got on the Eswatini monarch’s private plane in order to sneak into the country.

Not mentioned in the BBC article is that they’ve signed several deals on agricultural and energy cooperation, especially with regards to investment in Eswatini.
