The Parliament of Nauru has passed legislation to call a national referendum to rename itself to Naoero by a margin of 16-0. The measure has been justified with the view that Naoero is closer to the country’s actual name, with Nauru being based on a colonial-era spelling, and that doing so would help align the world closer towards perceiving the country as it truly is. This probably won’t change much, both as the state is tiny and as it’s wracked by much broader issues surrounding the threat of climate change, but I see no reason to criticise how this has been undertaken thus far (seeking consent in what seems to be a democratic referendum), and am supportive of the measure.
