  1. SS Premier Smith is adding the following question to a series of constitutional referendum questions in October: Should Alberta remain a province of Canada or should the Government of Alberta commence the legal process required under the Canadian Constitution to hold a binding provincial referendum on whether or not Alberta should separate from Canada?

Connection to the sub? A conservative independence movement in Canada has clearly captured the premier. The leader of the Conservatives said he will campaign against it.

It’s worth noting that the corollary, Québec, cannot initiate a referendum via petition nor can the Premier decide to hold one without a vote in the Assemblée Nationale which is also a confidence vote.

  2. Leave it to Smith to somehow make the question piss off everybody and please nobody. I didn’t think it possible.

  3. The 1980 Quebec question:

The Government of Quebec has made public its proposal to negotiate a new agreement with the rest of Canada, based on the equality of nations; this agreement would enable Quebec to acquire the exclusive power to make its laws, levy its taxes and establish relations abroad – in other words, sovereignty – and at the same time to maintain with Canada an economic association including a common currency; any change in political status resulting from these negotiations will only be implemented with popular approval through another referendum; on these terms, do you give the Government of Quebec the mandate to negotiate the proposed agreement between Quebec and Canada?

    The 1995 Quebec question:

Do you agree that Quebec should become sovereign after having made a formal offer to Canada for a new economic and political partnership within the scope of the bill respecting the future of Quebec and of the agreement signed on June 12, 1995?

It is wildly depressing knowing a Canadian premier has more in common with MAGA than anything even remotely resembling Canadian politics. Fucking cunt.

Tomas Lukaszuk, organiser of the Forever Canadian petition, said that he wanted his petition to put to a vote in the legislature. Was this just bluster on his part? Or did the Alberta Citizen Initiative act make that option possible?

  6. > In a statement this afternoon, the confederacy said moving forward on this path “confirms Albertans are living under a separatist regime.”
    > “Any effort to separate, including any form of referendum, is a breach of the Treaty relationship established through Treaty No. 6 and protected under the Constitution.”

I remember reading how during Quebec’s 1995 referendum some of the indigenous nations promised to immediately secede from Quebec to rejoin Canada had they succeeded. Wouldn’t be surprised if they end up doing the same here.
