Consensus forecast was for +159,000 jobs and for UR to remain at 4.0%, so actual figures surprised slightly on the low side for jobs, and surprised to the high side for UR.

December payroll figures were revised up by 16,000, from +307,000 to +323,000. January payroll figures were revised down by 18,000, from +143,000 to +125,000. In total, revisions to previous months were 2,000 downward.

    151k is respectable, basically consistent with a soft landing, but 1/3 of the jobs added were in healthcare which isn’t great.

    Pretty underwhelming report for those of us hoping for clear signs of the destruction caused by Trump and Musk.

    The mass government purges won’t really be reflected in the data until summer is my guess. Most people fired are still on Admin leave getting paid and the total number of folks let go is still relatively small. DoD and the VA shortly will be letting go 200k people plus and other 45k at IRS.
