Interesting analysis on the evolving nature and tactics of JNIM, an Al-Qaeda affiliatedwhich is one of the two main jihadist groups terrorizing the Sahel region – the other being ISIS – and why they may represent a much greater danger to West Africa than anticipated.

From their core territories in Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso, where economic and food insecurity, interethnic conflict, climate change and the brutal response of the military juntas ruling these countries have driven up recruitment, JNIM are now expanding into the northern regions of the coastal states of Benin and Togo – with credible reports of attempts also made in Côte d’Ivoire -, threatening regional development and security on a larger scale.

From a fringe insurgency, JNIM has grown over the past decade to be one of the most heavily armed and powerful non-state groups in the world, and reportedly aims for broader political ambitions, with leaders eyeing the succes of Syria’s HTS in ousting the government of Bashar al-Assad and replacing state institutions.

I watched a video essay detailing this a few days back.

The situation in the sahel is just depressing. And possibly one competing with sudan in the “actively being ignored” department.
