What can we learn from Zohran Mamdani’s upset in New York?

  1. * Don’t be a rapist
    * Have a good social media game
    * Don’t have a history of corruption
    * Campaign on improving people’s quality of life
    * Don’t be a rapist

    I know I said “don’t be a rapist” twice, but I feel like I have to repeat that fact for some people.

  2. “Perhaps most damning, it’s not even clear that Cuomo likes New York City or identifies as a New Yorker”

    This is a joke right?

    Democratic voters are unlikely to punish a candidate for being insensitive and offensive to Jews.

    Maybe moving farther right just alienates your voting base so they don’t come out and vote. Yes, rent control still sucks.

  5. I love how democrats keep getting surprised by the power of charisma and populism and messaging like it’s some new age social revelation. Bitch there are whole religions birthed by charisma and cult of personality.

    Don’t be a fucking terrible rapist candidate.

    Do fail to condemn the chanting of globalised violence against Jews.

    Leftists: omg is this the messiah?

  7. Scandalous candidates underperform (even w/ high awareness) + Charming retail candidates overperform (even w/ policy baggage)

    I think the thing everyone is looking past is that he clearly did not have many consultants, cause if he did he would not have taken endorsements from Hasan or Nick Mullen lol.

    Be charismatic and (ideally) good-looking. Have a simple message focused on quality of life. Have the ability to communicate well. Know how to use social media. Have outsider appeal.

    Moderate candidates with these qualities would defeat a socialist candidate without them. It all depends on the candidate.

    The antisemitic accusations on Mamdani keeping falling flat on further inspection for me.

    1) His main coalition partner is a progressive Jewish elected that wants a two-state solution
    2) He wants to massively increase anti-hate crime funding
    3) He has gone to temples to talk to Jewish New Yorkers several times to talk about their worries
    4) His support of the “Holy Land 5” was a nonprofit group that has alleged ties to Hamas, but people say the same on UNRWA and you can’t really help people in Gaza much without them.
    5) He supported removing tax emept status of Nonprofits that were helping West Bank Settlements. Many people agree those are bad.
    6) BDS isn’t antisemitic, isn’t about anti-expansionism and apartheid.

    You don’t want to just ignore an entire community about their worries, but I haven’t seen a lot past this. Has anyone else?

    Mamdani won my relatively conservative district. Cuomo was the problem. I don’t think we can create a national strategy out of his campaign.

    We have nothing to learn here besides the usual. Don’t choose bad candidates.
