In a brief published by Le Grand Continent, an analysis of UN voting patterns in 2025 finds that all European countries moved further away from the positions of the United States and closer to those of China. The shift followed the return of Donald Trump to the White House and several US votes alongside Russia against resolutions condemning the invasion of Ukraine. According to a study by Focal Data, the number of countries “strongly aligned” with Washington fell from an average of 46 under Obama and Biden to just seven under Trump. European states are still classified as closer overall to US than Chinese positions, but the divergence recorded in 2025 is unprecedented. The study concludes that the United States has become increasingly diplomatically isolated at the UN, while countries Washington seeks to court, such as Russia, remain closely aligned with Beijing.
